Kentucky Licensing Overview

  • Kentucky regulates Plumbing, HVAC, Fire Protection Systems and Boiler Contractors at the State Level.
  • Electrical Contractors are required to be Certified by the State and Licensed at the local level.
  • Pre-Approval is not required for HVAC and Plumbing (Master, Journeyman or Contractor) classifications before testing. Experience/Educational requirements exist.
  • Electrical applicants have Experience/Educational requirements, but do not need approval for testing. It is advisable to verify enough experience in the classification sought before testing.

Kentucky Journeyman Electrician(ICC Exam)

Electricians install, repair and maintain power systems for commercial, industrial and residential buildings. Training to become a journeyman electrician typically takes about 4 years, and involves an apprenticeship and state licensing. In Kentucky, electricians must pass an exam, provide proof of work experience, and log at least 576 hours of classroom training. Additionally, electricians must understand blueprints and electrical codes.

Kentucky Master HVAC Contractor w/ Business Law (ICC Exam)

This license allows license holders to contract and engage in the practice of HVAC. This license does not allow any hands-on work. License holders must either have or employ someone who holds a Journeyman HVAC Mechanic License in order for the business

The state licensing board requires all applicants for the Master HVAC license to take the Business and Law Exam in addition to the trade exam.
