Request Private TrainingAll contractors are required by the state to pass the Business and Law exam in addition to their trade exam to obtain a license. Some smaller specialty licenses in Tennessee can be obtained by passing only the Business and Law exam, without a trade-specific test. (Up to five specialty licenses can be held under the Business and Law license.) This is a critical exam for all contractor licensing in the state.
Request Private TrainingPrivate, live exam prep—one-on-one or for your small team—delivered in person or via live webinar on your schedule.
Custom Training is a private, live prep session tailored to your state and license exam. It’s ideal if you don’t see your course on the calendar, need a specific date/time, or want focused one‑on‑one (or small‑group) instruction — in person or via a live webinar.
Scheduled seminars run on preset dates with a group. Custom Training is arranged around your dates, location (our place or yours), and format (in‑person or live online). You get extended Q&A and hands‑on help organizing your open‑book references.
Both. We can meet at one of our centers or your office, or deliver the session as a live webinar — whichever is most convenient.
Yes. Tell us your headcount and objectives when you request Custom Training. We’ll recommend the format and propose dates that work for your team.
Each state/license has required references. You can purchase books and permanent tab sets in our Bookstore. Tabs help you navigate quickly on test day (within provider rules).
It depends on the state. Example – Tennessee: Business & Law is required for all contractor licenses and sometimes is sufficient for certain specialties. Check your state page or ask us.
Many are (or have open‑book components), but rules vary by state/provider. Example – Tennessee Business & Law: open‑book. Always verify on your course page and the testing bulletin.
Most states use third‑party providers (often PSI). Your course page links to the correct portal. We can also point you to the current bulletin and fees.
It varies by license/state. Example – Tennessee Business & Law: 50 questions, ~2h20m, 73% to pass (37 correct). Your course page lists the exact numbers for your state.
Yes — our Application Processing service handles the paperwork for many states (state fees separate). Ask us to bundle it with your training.
Pricing depends on license, delivery (in‑person vs webinar), and one‑on‑one vs group. Submit the request form with your state, license, and preferred dates for a firm quote.
Often very quickly — based on instructor availability. Include your ideal dates/times so we can prioritize.
Use the request form at the bottom of the page. We support most contractor licensing categories across many states and can scope a session even if it’s not yet listed.
Yes — ask us to include a Business & Law practice exam (and other practice content where available) with your Custom Training package.
We’ve trained tens of thousands of students over decades and consistently advertise a 99% success rate on our site. Results depend on individual study and exam performance, but our live prep is designed to help you pass on the first try.
Yes — if you’re unsure about classifications (e.g., residential vs commercial, specialties, Business & Law requirements), we’ll review your goals and state rules and point you to the correct path.
You may bring permitted editions. We carry permanent tab sets designed for common exams. Always follow your provider’s current bulletin regarding allowed materials.
We remain available for questions and can book extra review time if needed. For paperwork, consider Application Processing to streamline your license filing.
Recommended Reference Materials: The following books are used during the seminar and permitted in the exam. We highly recommend having these resources (they may be tabbed and highlighted with permanent tabs prior to testing):
You can purchase these books and tabs from our online bookstore. Complete book sets and pre-tabbed editions are available for convenience.
Tennessee's Business and Law exam is required for all contractor license applicants in addition to any trade-specific exam. Even for smaller contracting classifications that do not have their own trade exam, the Business and Law exam must be passed. This exam alone can qualify a candidate for certain specialty licenses (up to 5 specialties) without a separate trade test.
Important: Business and Law is not reciprocated with other states (you cannot waive it by having a license elsewhere). Also, Tennessee currently does not have any Continuing Education requirements for contractors related to this exam.
After passing the required exams, you will need to apply for your license. Application forms may be obtained from the state licensing board:
